A common question I’m asked in my Feng Shui practice is what to hang on the wall across the bed in the master bedroom.
The wall across your bed represents the “common vision” you should have with your romantic partner. The image you place on that wall represents your common focus and where you are headed.
Choosing the right image for the wall across the bed in the master bedroom pertains in Step 6 of the Nine Steps to Feng Shui® System – Use the Right Symbols. It is about telling the right stories in your home, to help you achieve what you want to achieve.
First let me share with you what not to do, and why, and then I’ll share what you can do to improve communication and reduce arguments in your master bedroom.
Never Put These Things on the Wall Across Your Bed

Here are some things you should never put on this wall:
- A mirror. Learn more about this here.
- A TV.
- Any item that only one partner likes and the other one doesn’t like.
- A tall dresser or wardrobe.
- Any art with reflective glass that would act like a mirror.
- Disturbing images.
- Images of one, three or multiples.
- Family photos.
- Wedding photos.
What Image Subjects to Avoid on the Wall Across Your Bed to Avoid Arguments
Intimacy comes from communication. Arguments come from miscommunication.
The image you choose for the wall across the bed should not include water. Water images promote individualism, which may be great in other rooms in the home, but not the master bedroom. Images of water in the master bedroom can be conducive to arguments about things each partner wants to do by themselves, and not as a couple.
Avoid images of forests as forests represent wealth and in the bedroom they are symbolic of arguments about property and investments.
Do not place an image of a stand alone mountain or volcano, where they are the main feature in the painting. Mountains in the distance, which are drawn very small on the painting, are OK.
What Images to Hang on the Wall Across Your Bed to Improve Communication
For the wall across your bed in the master bedroom, choose an image that both you and your spouse or partner love. It is best if you choose this image together.
The image you choose should be symbolic of what you want to achieve together, the places you want to go, your shared dreams, how and where you want to retire together.
New Couples
New couples that still have to establish common goals, benefit from images of gentle valleys.
This is an image that I have painted that meets these characteristics. This image has other uses in Feng Shui, like completing the floor plan or helping hallways feel wider.

The original of this image hangs in my home, but not in the master bedroom, because we’re not a new couple. We’ve been together for over 25 years!
Consolidated Couples
Couples that have been together for a while know what they want to achieve and where they are headed. However, they often forget to set time aside to enjoy together.
For these couples, an image that works great is a photo or painting of a garden with a place where you could go for a gentle walk, or sit to have a nice conversation while enjoying the outdoors.
Examples are:
- A garden with a gazebo.
- A gentle path through a garden.
- A table with two chairs.
- A bench for two in the middle of a garden.
Here’s a great example:

This is the image I painted for my husband and me. It currently hangs in our bedroom, on the wall across from our bed.
This image reminds us that, even though we have great times together as part of our daily routine, we need to make time to go places together.

This is also an excellent image for single people who want to be in a relationship.
