Our Western home decor uses mirrors for reflection.
Your mirrors reflect your image back to you. You go to a mirror to do your hair, to do your makeup. That’s where you go to check your clothes, to see how you are looking.
And you use that mirror to make changes, right? Maybe you brush your hair a little bit more, maybe you add a little more makeup. Maybe you change the jacket that you’re wearing with a certain outfit.
So, you’re using the mirror for reflection and for feedback, so that you can take corrective actions. That is the Western meaning of a mirror.
The Feng Shui Meaning of Mirrors
The Feng Shui meaning of a mirror is creating space.
When you place a mirror in a room, you can make it look wider. You can also make it look longer, which is not a good thing, or you could make the room feel bigger.
You use mirrors in Feng Shui to create the illusion of space. A mirror can make it seem like space continues into other areas.
Mirrors Give Us Feedback
You also use mirrors for feedback, but it’s a little bit different than our feedback in the Western use of a mirror.
So, in the West, we use the mirror to give us feedback on how we look and how our clothes look.
But in Feng Shui, we use mirrors to give you feedback on how you are doing in general in your home.
And for that reason, we want mirrors that reflect the truth. We don’t want mirrors that fragment, distort, or split up the image.

I have heard some Feng Shui teachers, even some very well known people, give advice on mirrors that doesn’t make sense from an architectural standpoint.
