The Meaning of Windows in the West
In the West, we see windows as openings that have the main function of bringing in natural light into the home. Many people don’t event open their windows anymore. When I go to visit clients, sometimes they tell me they have not tried to open a window for years — they haven’t felt the need!
In Feng Shui we have a much deeper meaning for a window.
Windows Are There to be Opened!
In Feng Shui, the function of a window goes beyond just allowing light into your home.
Your windows are there to be opened because you don’t just have to let in light, you have to let in fresh air. It’s very important that you are actually able to open your windows and close them, and do that very smoothly.
Windows Are a Form of Communication
Another function of windows is communication with the outside world.
If your children are playing outside, you can open a window and say, hey, come over, come in for dinner, and things like that.
In Feng Shui Windows Have a Symbolic Meaning
But a window also has a symbolic meaning in Feng Shui, which is to remind you that you are part of nature, because the window through vision gets you connected to the sky, to the trees, to all the beauty around you.

Most Modern Homes Do Not Have Windowsills
In modern homes, windowsills have virtually disappeared. In our home, we had to have somebody install deeper windowsills so that we could turn our windows into places.
In older homes in our Western culture, when people used other materials for building, like adobe bricks or stone, windows had windowsills that were actually places. That’s where the idea of the window seat comes from.
