Decluttering Requires Beauty – Organizing the Feng-Shui-Way!

Clutter is a universal challenge in modern life. Most of us living in industrialized countries have far more things than we truly need — yet we all long for the same dream: a home that feels tidy, peaceful, and beautifully organized.

Is that you?

When the urge to organize strikes, the first instinct is almost always the same. You head to the nearest big box store — Walmart, Target, or Home Depot — and make a beeline for the home organization aisle. It’s full of promise: neat stacks of plastic tote boxes, modular drawer systems, containers in every shape and size.

You remember how last time you bought opaque ones, thinking you’d label them later — but never did. So this time, you grab the semi-transparent versions, confident that being able to see what’s inside will solve the problem.

You get home and spend the entire weekend sorting and stashing your belongings into the new containers. It feels productive. Hopeful. But something’s off.

Despite all your effort, your home still doesn’t feel beautiful. It doesn’t feel serene.

Why? Because the Feng Shui is off!

Mistakes People Make When Trying to Organize

There are actually three hidden mistakes in this very common scenario — and all three are quietly sabotaging your goal of creating a space that’s not only organized but also uplifting.

Mistake #1: Trying to Fix “Too Much” with “More”

The first mistake is assuming that disorganization is the problem — when the real issue is excess. You don’t need better storage. You need fewer things. Buying more containers doesn’t solve a clutter problem. It just adds to it. After a trip to the store, you have increased the number of things in your home instead of reducing the amount of stuff you have. True beauty and order only emerge when we lovingly let go of what no longer serves us.

Mistake #2: Adding Ugly to Your Place

The second mistake is choosing utility over beauty. You may think that plastic totes and drawers are functional, but they rarely add elegance or grace to your home. In fact, they often do the opposite. Aesthetics matter. When you bring in something that’s unattractive — even if it’s meant to help — it subtly chips away at the joy and harmony you’re trying to create.

Remember: if your goal is to have a home that’s not only organized but also inspiring, every single thing you add must contribute to that vision — not detract from it!

Another issue with plastic organizers is that they’re so lightweight and flimsy, they’re easy for a child to knock over. I often see parents spend half an hour carefully picking up toys, only for their little one to tip the entire container over in two seconds — scattering everything all over the floor again. It’s frustrating, exhausting, and completely avoidable with sturdier, more beautiful storage options.

Mistake #3: Organizing in Unsustainable Ways

This is the one no one talks about. After that first big organizing push, most people don’t actually keep using those plastic bins. When they take something out of a drawer, they don’t put it back, but just throw it on top of it.

Once the drawers or boxes are emptied, they stay empty. Why? Because no one feels inspired to re-organize using ugly containers — or ones that smell like chemicals. And let’s face it, most plastic organizers do have a smell.

We naturally avoid things that are unpleasant to look at or touch. So even if they were meant to help, they end up becoming just another form of clutter.

A Better Way

Before you run out to buy more storage, ask yourself what you can release. What are the things that you don’t use and don’t love? That’s clutter, and clutter needs to have preset ways in which it leaves your home. See Have You Heard of the “Clutter Pipeline?

And when you do decide to bring something in — whether it’s a basket, a box, or a piece of furniture — make sure it’s something beautiful.

There are so many better options than plastic. Think shelves, woven baskets, storage ottomans, or antique chests — pieces that don’t just hold things, they enhance your space. Many of them are heavier, more stable, and child-proof—no risk of tipping over like flimsy plastic drawers.

Choose solutions that are both functional and beautiful. That way, you’ll actually want to maintain your space—and your home will feel amazing, not just “cleaned up.”

Because beauty is never a luxury — it’s a form of healing!

When you fill your home with things you use and love, chi, or life force, flows through your space creating balance and harmony in every spot. The care you put into your home, increases the positive chi. For example, dusting a beautiful piece of furniture with an oil that nourishes it and highlights the wood grain, is a completely different experience than simply wiping down a plastic bin.

You decide what kind of energy you want to have in your place as you clean and organize your home. Beauty just makes it easier.

By consciously choosing items that resonate with you and arranging them thoughtfully, you create a personal haven that supports your dreams and nurtures your spirit, embodying the true essence of Feng Shui.
