We often think of home improvements as something we do for ourselves or our immediate family — but the impact runs deeper. The home you create today can become a powerful force for healing your past. By choosing beauty, order, and functionality, you’re not just making life better now. In fact, you’re rewriting the story of generations before you. This is a personal story of how teaching my son to use tools helped heal something broken in my family line — and how every act of care in the home has the power to reach both backward and forward in time.
The Start of a New Legacy
Between my husband and me, I’ve always been the handy one in our home. So I took it upon myself to teach our two boys how to use tools — both manual and power. My younger son especially loved them.
One Saturday afternoon, when he was still a child, we spent hours on the back patio with a power drill, screwdriver bits, screws of all kinds, and an old board. I showed him how to match bits to screws, how to operate the drill, change the torque settings, and control the speed. It wasn’t just about building things. It was about teaching focus, patience, and problem-solving.
We both hold this memory as something precious.
A Skill That Shines
A few years later, during summer camp, the kids were asked to build musical instruments with simple materials. While many got distracted or fumbled with the tools, my son stepped up. He worked so well that by the end of the week, he and the teacher had built instruments for the whole class. She praised him for his focus and skill, and when he came home, he said something I’ll never forget: “Thanks for teaching me how to use tools, Mama.”
From Student to Craftsman
Now, he’s far beyond anything I could have taught him. His collection of tools puts mine to shame, and he’s doing a carpentry apprenticeship. In the meantime, he’s been building and fixing things for us: repainting doors, building a catio, customizing his dad’s office desk, creating a step stool for me, and currently replacing the bathtub and walls in one of our bathrooms.
He’s developing a strong work ethic and a real sense of professionalism. He learns from every project, invests in quality tools, and educates himself through YouTube, AI tools, tutorials, mentors, and experienced handymen. It’s a joy to watch.

The Wounds of the Past
My father was different. When I was 14, we moved into a newly built house in Ecuador. The structure was finished, but the details — the finishes — were not. Instead of doorknobs, we had bent nails to pull doors open. My father always said he was waiting to have the money to buy “really nice” doorknobs. Things were tight financially at the time, but within a couple of years my parents were flush again, yet the time to install the door knobs kept getting delayed. I’ve written about this in my book Room by Room, Feng Shui Secrets for a Happy Life.
By the time I left Ecuador at age 28, the doors still didn’t have knobs. When I returned three years later, they had finally installed some. They were the cheapest kind available. Still, seeing those doorknobs brought me relief. It was a symbol that something had finally been completed.
So now, when I see my son working so confidently and skillfully, I feel something deep within me begin to heal. I think, This is how it’s supposed to be. Not like the unfinished projects I grew up with.

Teaching and Trusting
My son is who he is today not only because we taught him, but because we also let him be himself. We supported his interests and gave him the space to explore and grow. When we, as parents, provide guidance and freedom, we help our children become more than we ever imagined.
And through them, we heal.
Your Home Remembers
The home you live in today constantly reminds you — consciously or not — of your parents’ and grandparents’ homes. If you grew up in poverty or dysfunction, every act of care and attention you give your current home helps rewrite that story.
If your childhood home was chaotic, cluttered, or in disrepair, then every time you clean, organize, or repair something, you’re not just improving your surroundings — you’re healing your lineage.
Every act of love you pour into your home becomes a thread in the tapestry of your family’s healing.
Healing Through Beauty
Not all family wounds come from trauma or neglect—sometimes, they come from scarcity. Even in homes filled with love, the lack of resources can leave an imprint. Many of us carry unspoken messages about what we deserve based on what our parents and grandparents could (or couldn’t) provide. But the beautiful thing is: we have the power to change that narrative.
Take Lucy, a client of mine. Her parents were loving, but they struggled financially and were never able to give their children a beautiful home. Now, as Lucy upgrades her own home with art, color, comfort, and even a little luxury, she heals her relationship with money and uplifts her family line in the process.
Every thoughtful change she makes, whether it’s choosing a soft rug, adding fresh paint, or finally investing in quality furniture, carries a message: We are worthy of beauty. We deserve ease. And that message echoes both forward to her children and backward to her ancestors, rewriting the story of what’s possible.

Honoring Those Who Came Before
I do this, too. When we replaced the cheap, battered kitchen cabinet doors that came with our home when we first bought it, I thought about how much my mom would have enjoyed them. Then I installed a mother-of-pearl backsplash because to my great-grandmother it was a symbol of luxury and wealth. She never owned a home, but I like to believe she smiles from Heaven when she sees mine.
The ornate cushion and ottoman in our living room? A nod to my grandmother, who loved grandeur. My spice cabinet? A dream come true for my aunt Cecilia, who would have loved to cook with all those rich flavors.
As I move around my home thinking how to add even more beauty and comfort, I feel accompanied by my female ancestors who have passed on, but are still with me.
And I hope the spirit of my father, too, feels some measure of peace watching how well his grandsons have turned out — capable, confident, and complete.

Your Home Is a Living Prayer
The way you care for your home today is not just about aesthetics or comfort. It’s an act of healing. It says, We are safe. We are whole. We are not stuck in the patterns of the past.
Every improvement you make, every loving choice in design or function, sends a message of love up your family tree.
Because healing doesn’t just flow downward to your children — it also flows upward, to your ancestors.
As you work to improve and beautify your home, use this affirmation to help set your intent.
As I care for my home, I honor my past and create a brighter future for my family.
