When my husband and I bought our first home, we were over the moon. Finally a place of our own, a blank canvas I could design exactly how I wanted! With my degree in architecture, I thought creating our dream home would be easy. But as it turns out, knowing how to design a house doesn’t always mean knowing how to make it feel right.
Reality Check: It Wasn’t Just About Looks
The first challenge was financial. After the down payment, we barely had any money left to furnish the place. But the bigger issue took me longer to see: something about the house just felt off. I could create beautiful spaces, sure — but I didn’t know how to create spaces that had good energy.
I Made a Lot of Missteps
In my eagerness to make the space feel complete, I made mistakes:
- Chasing trends – I picked styles that looked great in magazines but didn’t work for our daily life.
- Copying what others were doing – I thought if it looked good in someone else’s home, it would work in ours too, but it didn’t.
- Overspending – With our limited budget, I was tempted by credit offers — choices that ultimately made my decorating mistakes much more costly.
No matter how many design magazines I read or mood boards I made, I couldn’t figure out why our home didn’t feel warm, peaceful, or right.
My First Brush with Feng Shui… and Why It Didn’t Click

Eventually, I stumbled upon Feng Shui. It sounded like the missing piece. But what I found in books and online felt confusing and, frankly, disconnected. So much of it focused on placing random objects — lucky cats, bamboo flutes, three legged frogs — in corners of the house. It all felt forced, mismatched, and a little gimmicky.
I thought, Is this really what Feng Shui is supposed to be? Because the traditional Chinese buildings I had studied were breathtaking — balanced, elegant, and harmonious. The way Feng Shui was being presented in the West just didn’t line up.
Finding My Own Path: Feng Shui That Honors Beauty and Balance
That disconnect pushed me to dig deeper. I wanted to understand the original essence of Feng Shui. I wanted to avoid superstitions, while creating good energy, flow, and harmony. I realized that real Feng Shui isn’t about adding clutter in the name of “luck.” It’s about creating a space that supports you — physically, emotionally, and energetically.
I learned to:
☑ Read the energy of a space naturally, using light, air flow, and layout.
☑ Choose meaningful, beautiful décor that reflected our story, instead of random charms from a store.
☑ Blend function, feeling, and beauty so every room supported our lives and felt truly comfortable and uplifting.
Our Home Finally Felt Like Home
As I applied these principles, everything started to shift. Our home wasn’t just pretty. It felt supportive. The furniture placement made sense. The colors calmed and uplifted us. Every item had purpose and meaning. And I felt ever more comfortable to welcome people over.
Visitors coming into our home would take a deep breath, relax, and say, “Wow, it feels so good in here.”That’s the response I had been chasing all along — and it didn’t come from trends or trinkets. It came from intention, energy, and harmony.
