Excesses and Deficiencies Create Bad Feng Shui

One of the most common reasons a home feels “off” is because something is either too much — or not enough. These are what we call excesses and deficiencies in Feng Shui. Both can create discomfort, block the natural flow of energy, and leave you feeling tired or uninspired in your own space.

What Are Excesses and Deficiencies?

An excess is anything that is “too much.” A double or triple height ceiling, a long hallway, or a room so large it feels cold. These spaces can make you feel overwhelmed.

A deficiency, by contrast, is when something feels like “too little.” A narrow entrance, a space that’s too dark, or a low ceiling can make you feel restricted and unsupported.

Correcting Imbalances with Yin and Yang

In Feng Shui — just like in acupuncture or qigong — we rely on the principle of Yin and Yang to bring balance. Yin and Yang are opposite forces that support each other. Too much Yin? You add Yang. Too much Yang? You add Yin.

🌸 If the ceiling is too low, you can visually raise it with vertical patterns, or upward-facing lights.
🌸 If a hallway is too long, you can make it feel shorter by painting the end wall in a bright, strong color, and adding artwork with large images.
🌸 If a room feels cramped, you add elements that expand it — like bright light, reflective surfaces, and light colors.
🌸 If a space feels too big, you cozy it up with textiles, plants, or comfortable seating arrangements.

If a ceiling is too low, you can “lift it up” with lights that point the light upwards.

If a ceiling is too high, you can use low hanging chandeliers to bring down the height.

Feng Shui Is a Healing Art

Feng Shui is more than home decor — it’s a branch of ancient East Asian healing. It shares roots with acupuncture, herbalism, and qigong, using the environment as a tool for restoring harmony in your life.

When your home is in balance, you feel more energized, creative, and supported. When it’s not, it can feel like something is always just a little bit off — even if you can’t put your finger on it.

Excesses and deficiencies are easy to overlook — but once you start seeing them, you can transform your home into a space that truly supports your well-being.
