Everyone says they love high ceilings. It’s one of those features people feel they should want. They walk into a great room with a cathedral ceiling, look up, and exclaim, “Oh, the space! The light!” And yes — for a moment, it does feel impressive. It happens to me too at first sight, but then my practical side kicks in and thinks, this is a room nobody actually uses.
When “Grand” Turns Into “Impersonal”
We’ve been conditioned to believe that the higher the ceiling, the more luxurious the home. But there’s a limit. Eight feet is the standard height for ceilings, so increasing ceiling height to nine, ten or eleven feet, and even up to twelve feet (one and a half the standard height) can be wonderful. Beyond that, the room begins to lose its human scale.
A double- or triple-height ceiling may look dramatic, but it often feels cold and impersonal. The chi — the life energy — rises and dissipates, leaving the living space below ungrounded. Without realizing it, people often feel small or disconnected in these environments.
The Practical Problems of a Too-High Ceiling
There’s also the matter of practicality. When changing a lightbulb requires a contractor or cleaning a window means renting scaffolding, the space has stopped serving you. Heating, cooling, and maintenance become expensive and inconvenient. What once felt luxurious quickly becomes burdensome.

How to Feng Shui a High Ceiling
If you’re living with a ceiling that’s higher than it should be, there are ways to balance the energy and make the space feel human again.
Bring the ceiling down visually. Hang a chandelier or pendant light that descends into the space — this creates a focal point and helps contain the chi.
Create a human-scale zone. Group your furniture closely and use an area rug to define the main living area. This gives the room an energetic “ceiling” within the larger space.
Add height at ground level. Bring in tall plants, a floor lamp, or a piece of furniture like a grand piano that rises partway up — enough to balance the vertical space without exaggerating it.
Luxury That Feels Like Home
High ceilings can be beautiful, but beauty alone doesn’t make a home. True luxury is comfort — spaces that feel grounded, balanced, and alive. When your ceilings support that, your energy does too.
