Many living rooms don’t feel quite right, even when the furniture is beautiful, the colors are perfect, and everything is “done.”
And often, the problem is the lighting.
Not the style of the fixtures. Nor the wattage.
The height at which the light fixtures have been placed.
A living room needs three distinct heights of light to feel balanced, comfortable, and supportive:
🟣 An overhead light
🟣 A floor lamp
🟣 A table lamp
Why Height Matters
Light is not just about seeing. It’s about how your body feels in a space.
When all the light comes from one level — usually the ceiling — it creates a top-heavy feeling.
When light exists at different heights, the space begins to feel layered. Grounded. Human.
Your eye moves comfortably around the room instead of being forced into one place.
The Overhead Light — Overall Visibility
When I shared a reel about the three levels of light in a living room on social media, someone threatened to unfollow me if I didn’t retract myself. He said that overhead lights in a living room are a home decor “no-no!”
I replied “When you clean, how do you know things are clean?”
An overhead light is your starting point — even if you only turn it on for cleaning or when you have lost something.
Your overhead light gives the room its overall visibility. It helps you navigate the space.
Having an overhead light adds versatility to your living room. All of a sudden it becomes a room where you could work on special projects, like for example, hemming some pants.
However, used alone (in any room) an overhead light can feel like an interrogation room instead of a place to relax.
In Feng Shui terms, this kind of lighting can feel overly activating. It doesn’t allow the body to settle.
The Floor Lamp — Bridging the Space
A floor lamp brings the light down into the room.
It begins to connect the ceiling to the human level — where you actually live, sit, talk, and rest.
This is what softens the space.
Without this layer, a room can feel strangely hollow.
With it, the space starts to feel more cohesive and comfortable.
The Table Lamp — Intimacy and Grounding
This is the most personal layer of light.
A lamp on a table sits closest to your body. It creates a sense of intimacy, warmth, and emotional ease.
This is the light you turn on in the evening when you want to relax.
It anchors the room.
Without this level, the space can feel unfinished — like it’s missing its emotional center.
A Simple Shift that Elevates the Style of Your Living Spaces
If your living room feels off, don’t start by replacing furniture or repainting walls.
Look at your lighting.
Do you have light at all three heights?
🟣 Ceiling
🟣 Standing
🟣 Table
If not, that’s where to begin.
It’s a simple change — but it’s one of the most powerful ways to transform how your home feels, and how you feel inside it.
