Coffee off the Rug, Cables off the Floor

The other day, I was having a meeting with a member of the Dream Home Lab when she accidentally knocked over her cup of coffee.

It fell right over her favorite rug in the whole house.

It was lucky that we were on a Zoom call when it happened.

My student had been using her iPad to show me how she had plugged the lamp on her nightstand into an electrical strip. The problem was that the electrical strip was sitting on the floor.

And this is bad Feng Shui. Neither cables nor electrical strips should rest directly on the floor.

No Cables On the Floor!

Cables and electrical strips on the floor can increase nervousness.

There is always a little voice in the back of your mind that knows that if there were a spill, a leak, or a flood, someone could potentially get electrocuted.

Is that likely to happen?

Probably not.

But it isn’t impossible.

And your mind keeps track of these things, even when you aren’t consciously thinking about them.

You might look at something in your home and think, “That’s fine. It’s not bothering me.” But your body and your mind are constantly taking in information from your surroundings.

A cable stretched across the floor is something your mind has to register. You have to step around it. You have to remember where it is. You know it is there.

It is one more little thing your home is asking you to deal with.

So we were trying to figure out ways that she might attach the strip to the side or the back of the nightstand, when it happened. She accidentally knocked over her mug, which was full of coffee.

Attach electrical strips to the wall or the sides of furniture.

The coffee didn’t spill on the cables or the electrical strip. It landed on her most beloved rug.

It could have happened at any time, but it happened while we were on a Zoom call together.

And it was lucky that it happened while I was on the line because I knew exactly what to do.

How I Get Coffee Out of a Rug

I told her to get some hand washing dish soap and a small, moist towel. Then let a few drops of the soap fall on the stain, and dab lightly with the towel. Gently rubbing the dish soap into the stains immediately dissolved them.

She then used a different moist towel to remove more of the dissolved coffee and soap. She waited until the rug was completely dry to vacuum. After that, it looked good as new.

At home, we use this type of soap to deal with food and oil stains on clothes, too.

I cook from scratch, and I often manage to splatter my clothes while I’m cooking, even though I wear a full sized apron. I just have a talent for it.

Whenever I notice a stain, I dab it with some hand dishwashing detergent and then put the piece of clothing in the laundry basket to be washed whenever the next load goes into the washer.

The stains always come out.

But sometimes I wonder: does this work with any hand dishwashing soap?

If you try this at home, please first test to make sure your hand dish washing soap is not going to damage your clothes or rug. And let me know if it worked with the type of soap you use at home.

Now, let’s get back to the cables.

A Simple Feng Shui Fix

Once my student took care of the rug and was able to analyze the cable situation, she realized that she didn’t really need a whole electrical strip for that spot.

She only needed a small outlet multiplier.

She had just a few things to plug in — not several — so a smaller solution made much more sense.

And the best part? She already had one in a drawer.

She was able to solve the problem immediately by replacing the electrical strip on the floor with something smaller and more convenient, something designed to stay close to the outlet.

The solution to a Feng Shui problem doesn’t necessarily require buying something new.

Sometimes you already have exactly what you need at home.

You just haven’t looked at the problem that way before.

An outlet multiplier can help you make the most of an outlet, and none of the cables plugged to it just touch the floor. Untangle, elevate, and hide when possible.

What About Your Cables?

Take a look around your home. How are you handling your cables?

🟣 Do you have electrical strips sitting on the floor?

🟣 Are cables running across the floor?

🟣 Are they tangled behind your furniture?

If you are constantly stepping over cables or moving them out of the way, you are increasing sources of stress.

Start with one cable. One electrical strip. You don’t have to take care of all of your cables at once.

Follow this simple reminder:

Untangle. Elevate. Hide.
