Recently, one of my former students, whom I trained to become a Feng Shui Consultant, was sharing with me a Feng Shui enhancement she was thinking of recommending for her client.
Her client was going through a major life transition, so my colleague recommended a photograph of a bridge to help her connect her past life with the new life she would have to pivot into after this huge change. The photograph needed to face the main door. In other words, it would be the first thing they would see when they came into the home.
Licensed Feng Shui Experts that I have trained have an option of meeting with me via Zoom once per month. She had requested a call with me because she wanted help choosing the right kind of bridge.
Together, we browsed through images of bridges that would feel peaceful, calm, and not dangerous. Some images of bridges convey the image of risks and potential dangers.
We wanted the water to look like it was flowing toward the inside of the home and not toward the outside. Because if the water looked like it was flowing out, there would be a tendency for the people in the home to lose money.
The image above was one of the images we considered, but in this one, it looks like the water is flowing “toward you,” and in the case of this home toward the door, and it would make it seem like the water was leaving the home, instead of coming in.
It also had to be a pedestrian bridge, not a bridge designed for cars or large trucks. The purpose of the image was to let the client feel like she was safe and that this was not the end of the road — she had more places she could go.
We finally narrowed it down to three images so she could give her client some choices.
The one I hope she chooses is a Japanese-style bridge going over a pond. Very peaceful. Very safe.
Then we found the perfect image, and then another two for good measure, so that the client would have some options.
A Feng Shui Cure I Wouldn’t Have Thought Of
I was impressed by the solution she devised and how perfectly it aligned with her client’s needs and expectations. Using bridge imagery for this purpose was a creative approach I had not considered. I shared my admiration for this insightful choice.
She replied, “Well, I have had good training.”
Yes, she has.
At first, when she said that, I felt like replying, Well, you didn’t learn this from me, because I wouldn’t have thought of that cure.
But then it came to me that really exceptional Feng Shui training is not about teaching your students to do exactly what you would do. It is about teaching them to come up with their own creative solutions for what their clients need.
Your Experience Matters
My colleague integrates the Feng Shui principles she learned from me with the extensive expertise she has gained through her many years as a professional and business owner.
She can think back to her days owning a business and remember how a similar situation might have affected her, and what she would have needed in that case.
I always encourage my students to draw from their personal experiences and their unique perspectives to inform their work with Feng Shui.
Some former students are healers. Some are business people. Some are working their way up the corporate ladder, and some are housewives still raising children.
They all bring different experiences with them, and those experiences become part of how they work with their clients.
Feng Shui Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
When I train someone to become a Feng Shui Consultant, I don’t want them to simply learn what I would do in every situation.
My goal is for them to master Feng Shui principles so they can evaluate a client’s unique circumstances and determine the specific needs of both the individual and their home.
Sometimes the answer will be something I have taught them. And sometimes it will be something they come up with on their own. They can do this, because they have learned the principles well.
My Students Think For Themselves
I never taught my student, “When your client is going through a major life transition, use a photograph of a bridge.” She came up with this idea, and it is so good, I’m going to teach it to other students in the future.
Good training should give you the knowledge you need, but it should also give you the ability to use that knowledge in your own way.
My former student didn’t just remember something from one of my classes. She understood her client, connected that understanding with her own life experience, and came up with a solution that made sense for her.
That is what I want for all my students.
I want them to become Feng Shui Consultants who can think for themselves.
And sometimes, I want them to come up with something I wouldn’t have thought of myself. And then I can be in awe of them.
