Sometimes your home gets out of hand.
You get out of your cleaning routine, and then the tasks start accumulating. A dusty shelf becomes a dusty shelf plus a dirty baseboard, plus fingerprints on the fridge, plus a bathroom that needs attention.
Before long, everything feels overwhelming.
When that happens, you don’t necessarily need a big cleaning day. You may just need to start with one wipe.
Start With One Wipe
For situations like this, I use what I call the one-wipe method.
Every day, or most days, you grab a cleaning wipe and use it to clean one thing that doesn’t get cleaned regularly.
That’s it.
Maybe you wipe down the top of a door frame.
Maybe you clean a light switch, or one window, or a dusty shelf.
The important part is that you don’t make a list of twenty things you need to clean.
You just pick one thing and wipe it.
🟣 One wipe.
🟣 One neglected spot.
🟣 Then you’re done.
You Don’t Have To Keep Going
Here’s the part that makes this work: you make an agreement with yourself that you’re only going to use one wipe.
When the wipe is dry or has picked up too much grime, you stop.
You don’t tell yourself that you should have cleaned the whole room. You don’t turn it into a two-hour cleaning project. And you don’t feel guilty because you didn’t do more.
Sometimes that one wipe is enough.
Other times, something interesting happens.
Once you start cleaning, you suddenly feel like continuing. The floodgates open, and you find yourself wanting to clean a few more things.
When that happens, honor that feeling.
The one-wipe method isn’t a rule that says you can’t clean more. It’s a way of removing the pressure to clean more.
If you want to keep going, keep going.
If you don’t, stop.
You Can Be Mindful of the Environment
If using disposable cleaning wipes doesn’t feel right to you because of the environmental impact, you can adapt the one-wipe method.
You can choose cleaning wipes made from bamboo or other plant-based materials that are designed to be compostable. Just be sure to check the product’s packaging and disposal instructions, since not every product marketed as “bamboo” is necessarily compostable.
Or, instead of using a disposable wipe, you can use one moistened microfiber cloth and follow the same principle.
Choose one thing to clean and keep going with that same cloth until it is dry or has picked up too much grime.
The point isn’t the wipe itself. The point is giving yourself a simple limit that makes it easier to start.
Whether you use a disposable wipe or a reusable cloth, you can make the method work in a way that fits your home and your values.

Small Actions Add Up
The magic of this method is what happens when you repeat it.
You don’t have to clean everything today.
Instead, you clean one small thing today, then another tomorrow, and another the next day.
Over time, all those little things that normally get overlooked start getting cleaned.
You may not even notice the changes happening day by day. But after a few weeks, you can look around and realize that your home feels noticeably cleaner.
And because you weren’t spending hours cleaning, it doesn’t feel like such a big production.
It Can Change How You Feel About Your Home
There’s another benefit that has nothing to do with dust or dirt.
When your home feels out of control, it’s easy to start feeling like you are out of control.
You see all the things that need to be done, and every unfinished task becomes another little reminder that you’re behind.
The one-wipe method gives you a small win. You did something!
You took care of something that needed attention. And then you stopped before cleaning became another overwhelming obligation.
That can change how you feel about yourself and your home.
🟣 The house gets a little cleaner.
🟣 Life feels a little easier.
🟣 And you feel a little better about yourself.

You Don’t Need To Catch Up All At Once
If you’ve gotten out of your cleaning routine, you may be tempted to spend an entire weekend catching up.
Sometimes that’s necessary, but sometimes the idea of catching up is exactly what keeps you from starting.
You look around and think, Where do I even begin?
Begin with one wipe!
Don’t worry about everything else.
Pick one thing that hasn’t been cleaned in a while and give it some attention.
Tomorrow, do it again.
You aren’t trying to finish your entire house.
You’re simply creating a small habit that helps your home move in the right direction.
And sometimes, that’s all you need to get things going again.
Keep Making Small Changes
You don’t have to transform your entire home in a weekend.
Sometimes, improving your home means wiping one surface, putting one thing away, or making one small change that makes your space work a little better for you.
The important thing is to keep going.
When you make small improvements regularly, your home gradually becomes cleaner, more organized, more beautiful, and more supportive of the way you want to live.
And if you need a little help staying motivated, that’s exactly why I created the Dream Home Lab.
Inside the Dream Home Lab, you get ongoing support, weekly home-clearing sessions, classes, office hours, and a community of people who are also working on their homes. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own or wait until you have the time and energy to tackle everything at once.
You can make one small improvement at a time — and have support along the way.
Join the Dream Home Lab and keep making your home better, one small change at a time. Learn more or join here: https://communi.com/dream-home-lab/

I started using a similar technique with dishes a couple months ago, and now my kitchen is ALWAYS clean! I told myself I just had to put away 1 dry dish if there were dry dishes, or wash 1 dirty dish, if there were dirty dishes. No more. And of course, now I’ve gotten into the habit of cleaning up the kitchen very fast and very habitually, so it’s always “Back to one” like they say on a movie set.
Well done!
