The Story

According to legend, long ago, when there was no way to keep track of time yet, the Jade Emperor (or Emperor of Heaven) called a contest for all the animals in the kingdom. The first 12 animals to arrive at the palace would have a place in the Chinese Horoscope. In order to get to the Emperor they had to cross a fast river.

1. The Ox was the first to get to the shore on the other side and out of kindness agreed to carry the rat on its back as it swan across the river.
2. Right before the Ox presented itself to the Emperor, the Rat jumped to the ground and arrived first.
3. The Tiger swam across and was third.
4. The Rabbit crossed the river by jumping from rock to rock and hence became the fourth animal.
5. The Dragon flew, but was fifth because he stopped along the way to make rain and help all beings on Earth.
6. The Snake was sixth, but only because it had coiled itself around the horse’s hoof, and sprang up before it as the horse was arriving at the palace, so the horse became the seventh animal.
7. The Horse was seventh, though it should have been sixth, if not for the snake.
8. The Goat,
9. The Monkey, and
10. The Rooster became the eight, ninth and tenth animals in the Chinese Horoscope, arriving all together after sharing a raft.
11. The Dog, even though it was the best swimmer of them all, was eleventh — it was muddy and it decided to take an extra-long bath when it got to the river.
12. Just as the emperor was about to call it a day, the Pig arrived. He had gotten hungry during the race, stopped to eat and then took a nap. It woke up with barely enough time to make it to the palace.

Each animal was assigned a year, and that was the beginning of time tracking.

Characteristics of the Snake (Chinese Year of the Wood Snake 2025)

The Snake is a very respected sign in the Chinese Horoscope, because it represents wisdom and spiritual development. People born in a Snake year are believed to be studious and dedicated to knowledge.

The Snake is known for being drawn to the good things in life. They like luxury and the high life. Sudden Strikes

The snake bites when it needs to eat or when it needs to defend itself. When seeking food, it stalks and strikes suddenly and fast. Then it lets the venom do the rest. This is a good year to be alert and look at all the possibilities as if you were playing a chess game. Being aware of potential dangers makes you safer, but only if you don’t give in to fear. On the other hand, don’t let your heart get poisoned by negative thoughts or desires for revenge. The Wood Snake is a “plumed” or winged snake, which is a creature from mythology. The Wood element is associated with the wind, and the wind is seen as a messenger from Heaven. In many cultures around the world, this type of snake appears in myths of beings who arrived to teach people about building technology, agriculture and law.

The Wood Snake is the snake that frequently appears to people when taking hallucinogenic plants and going on Shamanic trips. This is a reminder to pay attention to the deep motives and the undercurrents of all events. The Wood Snake reminds you to ask these questions:

Remember that the Snake was 6th to arrive at the Jade Emperor’s palace only because it took advantage of the horse. It coiled around the horse’s back leg without its knowledge or consent. Even though it benefitted from the strength of the horse to cross the river and arrive at the palace, it had no gratitude, and jumped in front of the horse at the last moment, to take the other animal’s rightful place.

The Snake in Western Culture

The Eastern view of this reptile is in contrast with the Western culture symbolism of the snake being a representation of evil. In fact, many scholars believe that the snake was chosen as a symbol of the devil in Jewish culture, precisely because it was so difficult to eradicate the secret offerings that women made to the snake, as the Egyptian goddess of fertility.

In Western culture, the symbol of medicine, the caduceus, is represented as a short staff entwined by two snakes. Many people are baffled that snakes, which are feared around the world for their poisonous bite, are used as a symbol of healing. However, the people of ancient Mediterranean culture saw it as a symbol of health and healing because it could shed its old skin and regenerate.

In modern times, some people see the coiling two snakes as a symbolism for the double helix of our DNA.

In Yoga culture, some say that the snake represents the kundalini — a spiritual energy coiled at the base of the spine, which through practice can be made to spiral up the center of the body to the crown chakra and connect with divine energy.

The Snake in Indigenous Latin American Culture

In the indigenous cultures of Mexico and Central America snakes are associated with the rain and wind.

Their god Quetzalcóatl, the plumed serpent, symbolizes the connection between the spiritual world and the earthly world. This God is believed to bring gifts of knowledge.

The indigenous people of the Andes mountains consider snakes sacred, as they represent the underworld, deep wisdom, renewal and transformation. Their name for snake is “Amaru” and they called the American continent “Amaruka” — Land of the Serpent, in reference to the mountain chain that goes from Alaska to the souther tip of South American, close to the Pacific Coast.

During last year, the Chinese Year of the Wood Dragon, things would take off and then soar. Projects, once set in motion, tended to grow on their own. Because they were moving through the air, they found little resistance. This year will be different, as all events and projects must move and advance at ground level.

Think about the way the snake moves, undulating from one side to another. This is the only way the snake can move forward. It has to go smoothly from left to right.

You’re going to see politicians work across the isle in unexpected ways. If they don’t do this, it will be an extremely unproductive year. Among nations, you can also expect to see surprising new alliances and the end of long term alliances. These may be of the kind that will make you wonder if anything you had learned through the news before was ever true. This doesn’t mean that you have always been lied to, but, rather, that the balance of power has shifted. The powers that be are becoming the powers that were.

There is one power rising, of a few people with enormous financial power who, until now, have not had significant political power. There is another power rising in the mass consciousness of people who don’t have power by themselves as individuals, but who are united in the desire to not be lied to or manipulated any more. Like in the Western caduceus of medicine, these are the two currents moving alongside each other this year, going smoothly from left to right. They are climbing around the staff of the status quo. These movements may culminate in a confrontation of these powers, or in an integration of the two.

When I looked at the energies of the snake and the element, I didn’t see any signs of potential recession or depression. There will be the usual, normal ups and downs in the stock market, but in the end things will balance out.

This doesn’t mean that I can say with one hundred percent certainty that there won’t be a recession. However, there would have to be enormous government negligence/bad management, or intentional manipulation by huge multinational business and finance organizations, to cause one.

The Snake is a symbol of healing, so it is very likely that there will be some major news in medicine this year.

This could be the revelation of some momentous advance in medicine — something comparable to the invention of the pacemaker — that would be the result of long term research. However, it may also be that some hidden information about medicine and medical practices comes to light, and changes the way healing therapies are seen or practiced around the world.

The Snake is distrustful of people, because they themselves cannot be trusted. A relationship with a snake is always transactional. The Snake will treat you right if it is beneficial to them to do so. For this reason, make sure everything you do this year is a win/win/win situation. If you try to take advantage of someone, the Snake will take advantage of you. You will not outsmart the energies of the snake year.

Rabbit

In the West, we see the Snake as a symbol of evil, but in most cultures around the world the Snake is seen as a symbol for fertility and for spiritual awakening. In fact, experts believe that the Snake was chosen as the symbol of evil in the Bible because it was so hard to eradicate the practice of making offerings to the Snake goddess for fertility.

People born in Snake years are believed to be wise, always seeking deeper knowledge and willing to put the time and effort required for research. They’re not always as thorough in the application of their knowledge and can be reckless in their pursuit of it. For example, they may start practicing a healing art before they are fully trained or they might apply a technique that they’re not fully sure how it’ll turn out – just for the sake of finding out. Socially, they can be a lot of fun to be around, and once they commit, they can be great partners for life.

Horse

Horses are energetic and strong. They can keep going for long periods of time and they love their freedom, but once domesticated they become obedient.

People born in Horse years tend to be very active. They love sports, running –– when they go up and down the stairs they actually sound like horses. They are hard workers and measure their own value on their achievements. They don’t rest on their past glories, they want new ones.

Horses like to run with a herd or a band and they love the sense of adventure. Oftentimes they get carried away with the excitement and don’t realize the cost that will be required of their quests. Then they wonder how they got into a mess. It helps horses to stop and think before taking action.
